About this rug

Fine vines and small teal rosettes make this a lovely rug. Across a dusty rose field, fine vines scroll between small teal rosettes and blue blossoms. One repeating floral plan covers the whole field, and nothing sits at the center. A wide cream border carries large floral palmettes and curling leaves in pink, teal and blue, edged on the outside by a narrow teal band. A few patches across the face are worn low, and a light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing. Rose and teal sit side by side across the face of this rug. At 5'1" by 8'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

A single agency in Isparta had about 25,294 square meters of carpet woven in homes in the first half of 1911, the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. The carpets of Isparta, known as “Isparta quality,” were famous in the early years of the Turkish Republic. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly. This piece holds a rose and cream tone inside a structured floral plan, and the teal edge band adds a cool line to the repeating pattern.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
