A floral medallion in gray brown makes this a remarkable rug. On a cream field, a gorgeous floral medallion in gray brown with pale sage touches sits at the center, ringed by loose sprays of leaves and blossoms. The cream ends in scalloped curves, and gray beige bands fill the four corners with charming curling vines in the same soft tones. A narrow outer border of small flower heads in dark brown and cream runs around the rug. The pile lies low and level over the cream, which keeps the drawing crisp. The dense drawing holds the soft brown and sage notes against the pale ground. At 5'7" by 9'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
By 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet export company of the day, had workshops in five places, and Isparta was one of them. In the first half of 1911 the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers was in Isparta, where a single agency had about 25,294 square meters woven in homes. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This one carries that orderly floral arrangement on a light cream ground. Gray brown and pale sage accents replace the rose often seen in this palette.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
