This lovely rug has scrolling vines and small blue blossoms on a red field. The red field holds pretty scrolling vines and small blue blossoms in gray brown and cream. No central medallion anchors the design; the vine pattern covers the ground evenly. A handsome muted pink border carries a chain of red and blue flower heads, edged by narrow brown guard stripes. The pile runs low in spots, with the foundation visible in the open red areas. The colors are eased by a light antique wash, yet the drawing stays clear. The dense drawing mixes the soft red ground with cool blue accents. At 4'8" by 8'3", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Isparta was one of only five places where the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet exporter of the day, had workshops of its own in 1909. A single agency in Isparta had about 25,294 square meters of carpet woven in homes in the first half of 1911, the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. Isparta is a lake-country town in southwestern Turkey whose floral rugs use a softer, chalkier palette. An all-over floral pattern covers this rug from edge to edge. The pink border and blue blossoms sit lightly on the red ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
