About this rug

Rows of small octagonal cartouches, each framing a teal boteh, make this a charming rug. The tan field holds rows of small octagonal cartouches, each framing a dainty teal boteh and red accents. No central medallion breaks the repeat, so the pattern runs evenly from end to end. The corners blend into the border without spandrels of their own. A handsome warm gray main border carries angular teal vines and small red geometric shapes. A narrow guard stripe with a wavy red line and teal dots runs inside and outside the border. The pile is low and flat across the field, and the drawing stays clear. The geometric rhythm lets the teal notes stand out against the neutral ground. At 4'6" by 6'11", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Borujerd rugs

Borujerd lies in Lorestan, the home of the Luristan Bronzes, which date from the turbulent years of about 700 to 625 BCE. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, found most people of Borujerd farming, and only a small part weaving, encouraged by the prices of the Sultanabad rug trade. Borujerd sits in the Zagros foothills of western Persia, in Lorestan, and the weaving carries both village and tribal character. The drawing is geometric and a little loose, and the colors come from the same madder and indigo the whole region used. This rug keeps that loose geometry in its repeating cartouches and the stepped lines of the border. Rather than a single large medallion, this rug spreads small motifs across the whole tan ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
