About this rug

Teal trees with feathered branches stand beside the medallions in this charming rug. Down the center of a gray brown field runs a column of handsome linked medallions, each outlined in pink with a small cream-edged lozenge inside. Teal trees with feathered branches stand beside the medallions, and rows of little pink flowers fill the ground between them. A wider gray green band carries small boxes and stepped figures in pink and teal as the border, with narrow guard bands of flowers and dashes on either side. A full antique wash left no color at full strength, so the pink and teal read soft. The pile sits lower in patches across the field. The pink and teal lift the gray brown ground in a restful corner. At 5'4" by 8'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Lori rugs

Until the early 20th century the tribes of southwestern Persia were mostly nomadic, moving between summer and winter pastures. Lori weaving is the work of the Lur people of the western Zagros mountains. This is true tribal work, woven on portable looms, in formats that suited a tent rather than a hall. The geometry is bold and slightly loose, and you can see it in the boxy figures along the border and in the feathered trees beside each medallion. Color is where this one departs. Lori rugs are known for strong colors. This one has been washed down to soft pink, teal and gray brown, a gentler look for a bedroom or a study.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
