About this rug

A rust band crosses the top end of this lovely rug. Small flower sprays in olive green stand in staggered rows across a slate blue field, each outlined in dark olive. Darker blue green clouds move through the field, and there is no medallion, so the rows carry the whole plan. The gorgeous light brown main border runs a chain of gray blue diamonds with small gray green diamonds beneath, between narrow gray guard stripes. A wider rust band crosses the top end. A light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing, so every spray still reads clearly. The pile is worn low, with fine horizontal streaks across the field. It has a soft blue base, with the rust band at one end adding a warm note. At 5'3" by 8'3", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Lori rugs

Until the early 20th century the tribes of southwestern Persia were mostly nomadic, moving between summer and winter pastures. Lori weaving comes from the Lur people of the western Zagros mountains. It is tribal work in the proper sense, woven on portable looms in formats that suited a tent rather than a hall. This rug keeps that tent-sized scale. It departs most in the strength of the color. Olive and light brown stay understated around it, while the rust is held to a single band at one end.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
