About this rug

A charming scalloped central medallion sits among scattered floral sprays on the faded red field. The faded red field holds scattered floral sprays in rose, blue and cream around a scalloped central medallion. The medallion has a handsome cream star at its core, blue linework and a near-black edge, with lobed pendants above and below. Blue spandrels fill the four corners, with cream and red corner pieces and vine sprays. The main border is terracotta, carrying small red and blue flower clusters along its length. Guard stripes of pink and blue triangles run outside it, and a cream zigzag stripe runs inside. The pile is worn low across much of the field and the medallion, and the foundation shows through in pale patches. It is fuller in the border. Tight drawing fills the worn spots, and the blue corners tie the red ground together. At 4'11" by 8', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Sabzevar rugs

Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. Khorasan has its classic carpets in those of Herat, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Sabzevar lies west of Mashhad in eastern Persia, and its rugs sit between the two eastern traditions. They mix the curvilinear floral drawing of the Khorasan workshops with the plainer geometry of the surrounding villages. This rug shows the floral drawing in its sprays and corner vines, gathered around a central medallion.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
