About this rug

Three octagonal medallions with stepped stars are stacked down this lovely rug. The faded red field holds three large octagonal medallions stacked vertically, each framing a stepped star, blue on the upper two and teal on the lowest. Each medallion has a plum center and a stepped outline in teal and pink. Small baskets of blue flowers stand beside the medallions. A wide near-black border carries charming rosettes and stepped motifs in gold, pink, teal and cream. A tan stripe with a small vine runs inside the border, and an orange vine band runs outside it. Pile runs low in spots, where white specks of the foundation show across the red. The warm red ground and cool blue and teal stars suit a small room. At 4'5" by 8'1", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ghoochan rugs

Most people of Ghoochan descend from a tribe of Za’faranlu Kurds whom Shah Abbas I resettled there in the 17th century. They guarded the frontier, and in return lived under their own hereditary leader, exempt from all tribute. Ghoochan sits in the north of Khorasan in eastern Persia, close to the Turkmen country, and the weaving shows it. You get the repeating geometric figures of the northeast, worked in madder red and dark blue. This rug keeps those geometric figures, setting three octagonal medallions with stepped stars down the field. The near-black border frames them with small rosettes in gold, pink and teal.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
