Rows of star-shaped flowers alternate with boteh across this charming rug. Lovely rosettes and boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, in cream, gray beige, brown and muted pink cover the faded red field in an all-over repeat. No central medallion gathers the design; instead, rows of star-shaped flowers seen from above alternate with the boteh across the whole face. Small four-part flowers and tiny diamonds fill the gaps between them, and teal outlines pick out many of the leaf-drops. The pile is low through the center, where the red reads paler. The dense drawing holds the soft red, cream and teal notes together in one pattern. At 5'1" by 9'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
The town of Arak dates only from 1808, when it was founded as Sultanabad, a name the carpet trade kept. The Swiss firm Ziegler began there in the mid-1870s with 40 looms, and by 1894 had 1,200 in the town and 1,500 more in the surrounding villages. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the beginning. The result is a wide field, plenty of space between the motifs, and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. This rug shares that soft palette, with muted pink, cream and gray beige set against the faded red. The repeat runs edge to edge with no central medallion, and the teal outlines add the one cool note.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
