About this rug

This lovely rug carries a large elongated hexagon in the middle of a tan field. Across a tan field, geometric figures in dark brown, mauve brown, cream and pale green repeat in vertical columns. A large elongated hexagon occupies the middle, holding stepped diamonds and rectangular forms within its outline. Handsome beige corner pieces fill the four angles, each worked with angular motifs and small triangles. The wide border carries dark brown geometric shapes and pale green accents on a tan ground, edged by narrow guard stripes with a simple line. The pile is low and flat across the field, and the tan reads a little paler through the middle. The earth tones stay gentle. At 5' by 8'4", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Borujerd rugs

Borujerd lies in Lorestan, the home of the Luristan Bronzes, which date from the turbulent years of about 700 to 625 BCE. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, found most people of Borujerd farming, and only a small part weaving, encouraged by the prices of the Sultanabad rug trade. Borujerd sits in the Zagros foothills of western Persia, in Lorestan, and the weaving carries both village and tribal character. The drawing is geometric and a little loose, and the colors come from the same madder and indigo the whole region used. This rug keeps that geometric character, with stepped forms and angular borders worked in earth tones. Unlike the madder and indigo palette often seen here, the pale green accents add a cool note to the warm tan ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
