Small stylized animals sit in the upper rows of this remarkable slate blue rug. On a slate blue field, cream and tan lozenges with hooked arms repeat in columns, with small stylized animals in the upper rows. There is no central medallion; hooked boteh forms and a few rust lozenges fill the open ground between the rows. Gorgeous octagonal cartouches in a wide pale blue main border hold charming cream and tan rosettes, with a brick band of cream rosettes and crossed marks outside. Guard stripes in cream and dark brown run inside the border. The pile is full, and the blue shifts from gray blue to deeper blue in bands across the field. It grounds a reading chair, letting the cool blue base balance the warm rust notes. At 5'3" by 8'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Shiraz rugs
Shiraz was the capital of Persia from 1760 to 1779, in the reign of Karim Khan. The Qashqai tribal confederacy was formed in the late 18th century, during or just after the rule of Karim Khan Zand in Shiraz. Rugs sold under the name Shiraz were woven by tribal and village weavers around the market city of Fars province in southern Persia. Geometric and often asymmetric drawing is the rule, with small stylized animals and birds turning up in the field. This piece has that geometric drawing, with small animals in the upper rows between the lozenges. Cream and tan stand out against the blue ground, with brick in the border.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
