A large tan medallion on a steel blue field makes this a lovely rug. Steel blue carries the field, worn to pale streaks in places, with pretty tan vines and small blossoms. A large tan medallion sits at the center, holding a blue flower core, with a short pendant above and below. Beautiful round scrolled spandrels in cream and tan fill the four corners, and a patch of deep rose shows across both upper corners. The main border is gray brown, carrying blue leaf scrolls outlined in near-black. Narrow guard stripes in tan and near-black frame the border. Pile has worn thin through the field, and the foundation shows through in streaks. It brings a cool blue note to a sitting area, balanced by the warm tan of the medallion. At 6'2" by 9'7", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Isparta was one of only five places where the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet exporter of the day, had workshops of its own in 1909. In the first half of 1911 its Isparta workshop wove more carpet than any of the others, about 12,318 square meters. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing. Here the central medallion and the four corner pieces sit in balance. A steel blue field and a gray brown border set the colors, with a patch of deep rose at the upper corners. The blue field is worn into pale streaks, and tan carries the medallion and corners.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
