A pendant at each end closes the gray brown diamond medallion of this lovely rug. A terracotta field, stepped in outline at the center, holds a splendid gray brown diamond medallion filled with small pale flowers and closed by a pendant at each end. Gray brown corner pieces step in from all four corners, each carrying charming flower sprigs and leaves. The wide tan main border holds rust and gray brown palmettes, each a fan of petals that stands for success, between pale gray green and rust zigzag guard stripes. A light antique wash has softened the colors without reaching the drawing. The pile has worn low through the middle of the field, with a few small pale spots. The gray brown and tan keep the edges soft around one warm center. At 5'3" by 7'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Khoy rugs
Khoy was long a trade center of real strategic importance, fortified in the 19th century and held by Turkish troops in 1911 and by Russians until 1917. The caravanserai of Khoy is one of the 54 on UNESCO’s Persian Caravanserai World Heritage listing, inscribed in 2023. Khoy lies in the far northwest of Persia, next to the Turkish border. Its weaving shows that closeness: geometry over floral drawing, strong contrast, and hooked motifs on both sides of the frontier. This rug keeps the geometry in its stepped medallion and corner pieces. It departs in a floral drawing, with flower sprigs in the medallion and corners and palmettes in the border, and in softer colors that sit close together. Wear has taken the center low, so the terracotta and gray brown meet softly, forming a muted old piece rather than a bold one.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
