About this rug

Faint blue rosettes lie far apart on this lovely rug. Over a warm gray field, faint blue rosettes and small brown sprays are spaced far apart, with small oval rings floating between them. There is no central medallion. Large slate blue spandrels fill the four corners with charming scrolling vines that fade into the field. There is no main border; the design stops at the edge, leaving the gray ground open to the very end. A full antique wash, no color left at strength, has brought the blue and brown down to one even level with the ground. The pile is low across the face, with pale flecks of foundation showing. In a sitting area, the blue notes give contrast so this much gray does not look flat. At 6'3" by 9'5", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the start. That means a wide field, generous spacing between the motifs, and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. This rug keeps that generous spacing, with the small motifs floating far apart on the open ground. Because the design is not crowded, a Mahal reads calm across a big room. The wash has taken the colors very far down, leaving the drawing as a faint trace rather than a clear pattern.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
