About this rug

Cream rosettes in a dense lattice make this a delightful rug. A dense lattice of delicate cream rosettes, small blue flowers and pale blue curls covers the gray brown field. No central shape interrupts the pattern, which repeats across the whole face with small diamond shapes between the flowers. The gorgeous main border is tan, set with large cream lozenges and blue blossoms. Narrow guard stripes of cream scrolls and blue edge the border on both sides, framing the field. The pile is even over the field and the border, and the field reads paler and grayer toward the center. In a room of natural textures, the soft brown and cool blue sit side by side. At 6'11" by 10'3", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Woven in the villages around Arak in central Persia, Mahal rugs were large and open from the start. They have a wide field, generous spacing between the motifs, and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. This rug keeps that soft palette, with gray brown, tan and cream carrying the face and blue as the one clear accent. Its all-over repeat fills the wide field without gathering into a central shape.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
