The soft blue-gray ground and warm mushroom brown are a charming pair. The whole rug has mellowed into a hushed conversation between two tones, a soft blue-gray ground and a warm mushroom brown. The brown carries an all-over herati pattern of curling leaves, rosettes and little diamonds across the ground. The borders stay within the same range, their lovely floral meanders barely a shade darker than the field. Nothing shines and nothing shouts, and that is precisely the charm. It is an ideal rug for calm, textural rooms where linen, plaster and pale wood set the tone. The muted repeat gives the floor gentle movement without pulling focus, and the low, even pile slides easily under furniture. At 8' by 11', it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the beginning. The result is a wide field, plenty of space between the motifs, and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. This one has gone further in that soft direction than most, with navy and red washed down to gray and mushroom until the herati repeat looks almost like texture. With uncrowded drawing and low contrast, it looks even across a big room, which is exactly the job Mahal rugs were made for.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
