Pale blue sprays across this gray brown field make a charming pattern. At the center, faint diamond outlines and small sprays in pale blue drift across a gray brown field. The pattern is an all-over lattice with no medallion. The main border is gray beige, carrying small palmettes and crescents in pale blue. A thin gray beige guard stripe runs all the way around the field. No color is left at strength: a full antique wash has taken the rug to one warm level of gray brown, beige and gray beige. The pile is low across much of the field, with pale specks where the weave shows. The pale blue marks stay visible in a bright room. At 8'9" by 12'2", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. It had its rugs made less complex than traditional Persian carpets, so that they would not look out of place in European homes. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the beginning. The result is a wide field, plenty of space between the motifs, and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. This rug keeps that open layout, with the lattice and small sprays spaced widely across the field. Its colors are gray brown, beige and gray beige, with only a little pale blue left in the sprays.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
