Brown cartouches in the gray beige main border give this rug a charming look. The gray brown field holds a loose spread of pretty curling vines and flower heads in brown and sage. A gorgeous diamond medallion with a dark outline anchors the middle, holding a small teal rosette with scrolled points above and below. The corners stay open, with the loose field sprays running right into them. The main border runs gray beige, set with brown cartouches and small teal blossoms, edged by narrow bands of teal and brown. The face is washed and soft in color, with low pile across the field where the weave shows through. Sage accents cool the warm brown tones across this ground, letting it serve a large room. At 8'11" by 12'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
Mahal is a trade name and not a town: it covers village carpets from the neighborhood of Arak. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Arak, then called Sultanabad, weaving rugs for its market. The villages around Arak in central Persia wove Mahal rugs large, with a wide field and generous spacing between the motifs. The palette leans soft rather than saturated, and this rug shows it in faded browns, sage and teal. Because the design is not crowded, a Mahal reads calm across a big room.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
