About this rug

The pale blue-green medallion at the center makes this a charming rug. Across a gray brown field, dainty paired sprays of flowers and curled leaves float around a central medallion. The lobed medallion is pale blue-green, with a pale center panel and pendants reaching up and down the field. Along the top and bottom, a row of stepped panels holds vases, stars and small rosettes. The broad main border is gray beige, set with lovely dark diamond rosettes around the rug. A thin dark brown band of repeating flowers frames the field. Low pile covers the whole face, and the colors sit soft and even. It suits a room where soft neutrals are needed, the pale blue-green medallion keeping the brown from feeling heavy. At 8'10" by 12'11", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Medallion carpet designs of the 16th century are usually associated with Tabriz, then the Safavid capital and the seat of the royal design workshops. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Medallions are properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan worked out in full before weaving began. This rug keeps that planned layout, with the medallion centered and the sprays set in matched pairs. The gray brown ground carries touches of pale green and muted pink.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
