The lobed medallion with its pink core is lovely. At the center, a lobed medallion with a pink core and a cream outer panel sits on a gray brown field scattered with small cream rosettes. Splendid salmon pink corner pieces carry pretty scrolling branches of blossoms in brown and sage that echo the medallion. The sage main border carries small flower heads and sprigs in cream, brown and teal. Narrow brown stripes with a fine zigzag edge sit inside the main border. Pile is thin across the field, with pale specks where the foundation shows. It anchors a seating group, the salmon corners and sage border keeping the gray brown ground from feeling flat. At 7'7" by 10'6", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
From the middle of the 1800s commercial carpet weaving revived in Persia, and Tabriz was one of its most important centers, weaving largely for Europe. The Swiss firm Ziegler, in time the biggest exporter of carpets from Persia, had its first lucky break in Tabriz in 1876. Tabriz in northwestern Persia has a city workshop tradition. These workshops used a broader palette than most, placing ivory, gray beige and pale blue grounds alongside the reds. This rug shows that range, with a gray brown field, salmon pink corners and a cream medallion.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
