About this rug

The inscribed cartouche adds a charming touch to the navy main border. Fine vine work, palmettes and little flowers in burgundy, rose and tan cover a dusty blue field. At the center, a splendid lobed medallion in tan and gold holds a burgundy core, with teardrop pendants above and below. Beautiful scalloped tan corner pieces carry burgundy and rose flowers. The navy main border sets large curling palmettes in tan and gold on its dark ground, with a small inscribed cartouche woven into one side. Narrow brick red guard stripes and cream bands of flowering vine sit on either side. The pile has thinned in patches, most clearly below the medallion and at the upper left, and the foundation shows in a few small spots. The blue and tan glow under warm lamplight in a library or living room. At 8'2" by 11'2", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashmar rugs

Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. Kashmar workshops, in eastern Persia’s Khorasan region, worked large, and they had a taste for pictorial and garden designs. A medallion rug like this one is a departure from that taste. It follows the medallion tradition further west, with a lobed center, pendants and corner pieces. The border stays generous in the Kashmar way, built from several bands around a wide navy stripe.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
