About this rug

The long diamond medallion looks wonderful with its cream core and blue rosette. Over a tan field, charming curling vines carry small blossoms and palmettes in dark brown and steel blue. At the center lies a long diamond medallion, its cream core set with a blue rosette inside a dark brown frame. The frame lengthens into pendants at the top and bottom. Each corner is dark brown and ends in a cream wedge worked with blue vines. The main border is dark brown, with pale beige palmettes and scrolling leaves. Several guard stripes in blue and beige edge it on both sides. Full pile covers the field and the border. It grounds a room in warm earth tones, and the steel blue stays clear against the brown. At 8'3" by 12'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Their animal designs match those in royal manuscripts and book bindings, all of them born in the Safavid court design workshop. The formal Persian rug is most closely tied to the central Persian city of Kashan: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Kashan rugs were made to be the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This rug has the central medallion, the four corner pieces and a field full of vines, with blue picked out against the tan and brown.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
