About this rug

The faint medallion outlined in blue adds a lovely detail. Delicate curling vines and small blossoms in dark blue and steel blue scatter across the tan field. A faint medallion outlined in blue rests in the middle, with a vine rising above and below it. Small dark blue pieces mark each corner, partly faded. The main border is gray beige, scattered with pretty blue sprigs and small motifs, and a blue vine scroll runs along its edges. The pile is worn low across the field, and the foundation shows through. A full antique wash has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. The tan ground and the blue drawing stay together in one worn piece. At 9'6" by 12'11", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

The story goes that the three Wise Men of the East set out from Kashan to follow the Star of Bethlehem. In the 1600s, when Poland and Persia had close relations, the Polish nobility ordered many gold-threaded rugs from Kashan. The formal Persian rug is most closely tied to the central Persian city of Kashan: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. This rug keeps a small central medallion, corner pieces and the curling vine. Kashan rugs were made to be the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. Here the ground is tan and the drawing is picked out in blue.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
