About this rug

The round, many-petaled medallion in tan and powder blue is wonderful. Set within a navy field, charming scrolling vines and palmettes in cream, tan and powder blue fill the ground. A round, many-petaled medallion anchors the middle, worked in tan and powder blue around a cream core. Navy ground carries the main border, filled with curling palmettes and vines in pale blue, tan and gold. Wide guard bands in powder blue and gray beige lie on either side of the main border. The pile is full across the field, with a few pale specks near the end border. It grounds a large seating group, the deep blue field holding the lighter accents steady. At 9'4" by 13'5", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. These were made as the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This piece keeps the formal plan, with a round medallion at the center and scrolling vines across the field. The palette is cool, a deep indigo ground lit by powder blue and cream, with small red and gold notes.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
