About this rug

Fine concentric rings give the round central medallion of this navy rug a charming look. Over a navy field, scrolling vines carry gold palmettes and pale blue blossoms with small red centers. A beautiful round central medallion in pale gold and light blue is built of fine concentric rings. The vine pattern runs on into the four corners with no separate corner pieces. The gorgeous main border is near-black, bearing blue-gray, gold and cream flowers on a running vine. Narrow guard stripes in pale gray-green with small diamonds edge this band on both sides. White specks of exposed foundation dot the field and border, marking tiny low spots in the pile. In a formal room, the navy field lets the gold and pale blue flowers stand clear. At 10' by 13'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

It was long the custom to bring raw silk from other places to Kashan to be spun and dyed there. Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. These were made as the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This piece shares the central medallion and the curling vine and palmette field. Its corners carry the vine straight on, without separate pieces.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
