About this rug

Orderly rows of curling paisleys set a wonderful rhythm on this rug. A navy field planted with orderly rows of curling paisleys and small flowering shrubs in rose, green, ivory and brick, an all-over composition with no medallion to break the rhythm. The red main border answers with a bold procession of large ivory botehs wrapped in blossoms, and a crisp ivory guard stripe separates field from frame. It is a rug of pattern and repetition, steady as a heartbeat. That is its practical gift: nothing needs centering, so the furniture can go wherever the room wants it. The navy ground wears invisibly in daily use, and the rose and green detail rewards a close look without ever making the room busy. At 9'5" by 12'2", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Medallions are properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan worked out in full before weaving began. The boteh, the curling teardrop that fills this field, is a classic motif of Persian weaving, set here in rows that hold their spacing from edge to edge. The navy and red here are the classic Tabriz combination. Tabriz workshops also worked in a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds turn up alongside the reds.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
