The round lobed medallion in tan and sage blue is lovely against the navy field. The navy field shows pale streaks scattered across its surface. A round lobed medallion in tan and sage blue holds a small rosette at its core, with a pendant above and below it. Charming sprays of tan and teal blossoms gather in the four corners and run along the edges of the field. The main border is navy, set with rows of tan boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, among small blossoms. A wide tan band with a fine scroll runs inside it. The pile is worn low in broad streaks across the field, and the pale foundation shows through across the center. Deep blue fills this large rug, while the tan drawing warms the cool ground. At 9'1" by 12'7", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kerman rugs
Nadir Shah took many of Kerman’s most skilled weavers north after 1739 and the city was pillaged in 1794, yet its rug industry continued to prosper. In the Persian rug trade the carpets of Kerman rank first, ahead of the rugs of Hamedan. Kerman in southeastern Persia worked in the softest palette of the major Persian centers: powder blue, ivory, rose and pale green, often on a pale ground. The drawing is curvilinear and open, with more space left empty than a Kashan or a Tabriz would allow. Here the ground is navy, with tan and sage blue carrying the drawing around the medallion.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
