The steel blue border with its cream cartouches is the place to start describing this remarkable rug. Within a navy field, delicate curling vines, boteh and small blossoms spread in cream, rust and gold. A splendid red medallion at the center holds a cream core with a small pale blue heart, and curled pendants reach above and below. Pale blue corner pieces sit at the four corners of the field, set among cream scrollwork and red. The main border carries red palmettes and cream cartouches on a steel blue ground, framed by narrow floral guard stripes. Low patches show across the dark field, and a few specks of foundation appear in the border. The navy ground and red medallion stand out against dark wood. At 9'10" by 12'7", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashmar rugs
Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. Kashmar is in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, and its workshops worked on a large scale. A taste for pictorial and garden designs, wide fields and generous borders sets it apart from the medallion tradition further west. This rug has the wide field and the generous border, with a garden of vines and leaves around a central red medallion. Pale blue corner pieces and a steel blue border set off the dark ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
