About this rug

The large round medallion is wonderful on the navy field, with its burgundy and tan lobes. The navy field holds scattered sprays of flowers and leaves in pink, red, cream, steel blue and olive. A large round medallion holds the middle of the field, its rings of burgundy and tan lobes closing around a cream and blue rosette. Tan spandrels occupy each corner, packed with charming pink blossoms, red scrolls and pale blue leaves. The broad main border is dark navy, set with red, pale blue and cream flower heads among smaller blossoms. A tan band with brown scrolling vine runs inside and outside it, and a pale blue band with small flowers sits at the field edge. Full pile covers the field and borders evenly. The navy ground gives this large rug a dark base for the busy floral drawing. At 8'11" by 12'10", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kerman rugs

The Wagner garden carpet of the Burrell Collection, made in Kerman under the Safavid dynasty, is the earliest garden carpet outside Asia. In the first half of the 20th century Kerman rugs were sold in the West under the name Kermanshah. Kerman in southeastern Persia worked in the softest palette of the major Persian centers: powder blue, ivory, rose and pale green, often on a pale ground. Here the soft pink, pale blue and tan flowers sit on a deep navy field instead. Sprays of blossoms fill the ground around a round center medallion.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
