This deep navy field holds an amazing dense garden of scrolling vines. A deep navy field carries a dense garden of scrolling vines, curled paisley leaves and small blossoms in rose, red, olive and camel. At the center, a gorgeous round starburst medallion opens in gold, olive and teal, with red petals around a small ivory-ringed rosette. Lighter gold and olive clusters gather in the four corners. The beautiful navy main border holds ivory-outlined palmettes between guard stripes in rust, cream and pink, with a band of mid blue inside them. The pile looks full and the drawing is crisp down to the smallest leaf. The deep navy field stays cool while gold and rust add warmth, complementing oak or walnut floors and walls in cream or gray beige. At 9'10" by 12'10", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashmar rugs
Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. The workshops of Kashmar, in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, worked large. They favored wide fields, generous borders and garden-style drawing over the hard-edged medallions of the west. This rug follows that habit closely. The navy field is packed with vine and blossom, and the medallion is a soft starburst that sits inside the garden instead of cutting across it. The border is generous too, built from several bands. Kashmar is known for deep reds, and here they appear in small doses as blossoms and petal tips, which lets the navy lead.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
