The cream boteh motifs in the four corners are remarkable against the navy. Over a navy field, scrolling vines and small blossoms in rose, rust and cream fill the dark ground. A gorgeous lobed medallion of cream and deep red sits at the center, holding a small blue rosette as its core. Large cream boteh motifs, the paisley leaf-drop, occupy the four corners against the navy. The main border is deep red, carrying palmettes and curling leaves in cream, tan and blue. Thin cream and slate blue stripes frame the wide red band on both sides. The pile is full across both the field and the border. Tight patterning keeps the deep blue and warm red from looking crowded. At 10' by 14'8", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Alexander the Great gathered the Persian treasure and left it at Ecbatana, now Hamedan, in the keeping of his chief treasurer Harpalus. His closest friend Hephaestion died there in the autumn of 324 BCE. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses. This one is a room-sized piece, with vines and blossoms spread over a broad navy field and a large boteh in each corner.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
