The diamond medallion of cream and blue is lovely inside the oval wreath. Set within a navy field, a diamond medallion of cream and blue sits inside a large oval wreath of tan and gold blossoms. Charming sprays of flowers are scattered across the dark ground around the central figure. Camel spandrels in the four corners are dense with dainty curling vines and palmettes in cream and tan. Mid blue forms the wide main border, which carries cream and tan flower heads. Narrow camel and navy bands run along both sides of the border. The navy field has a few thin patches of low pile. In a formal room, the deep blue ground cools the warm gold drawing. At 9'1" by 13'9", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. This piece keeps that layout, with an oval wreath around a diamond medallion and camel spandrels in the corners. The ground is navy, where old Kashans are known for saturated madder reds.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
