A round pale gray-blue and cream medallion makes a wonderful centerpiece on the navy field. The navy field is crowded with graceful scrolling vines, palmettes and flower heads in cream, tan and powder blue. At the center, a round medallion in pale gray-blue and cream is framed by a small teardrop above and below. The main border is navy as well, set with flower heads and palmettes in blue, cream and tan. Inside it, a band of light blue ground with cream scrolls and a narrow tan band of small flowers line the border on both sides. The pile is full and even across the field and the borders. It holds a large room together, letting the bright floral drawing stand out against the navy ground. At 10'2" by 16'5", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Nothing is known of Kashan carpets from the 1600s through the 1800s; then, at the dawn of the 20th century, a large commercial production arose there. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug. These rugs were made as the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This one has a round medallion at the center of a field packed with small flowers and vines, framed by a wide floral border.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
