A cream diamond medallion is the delightful focal point of this Hamedan. At the center, a small cream diamond medallion sits on a burgundy field crowded with a dense lattice of navy and olive leaves. Handsome dark navy spandrels cut across the four corners on long diagonal lines. The main border runs cream, carrying pretty red and blue flowers and leaves on a curling vine. Red guard stripes edged in green and navy frame this broad band along both sides. Pile stays even over the whole rug, keeping the small drawing sharp. It brings the deep red and navy notes into balance over a broad floor. At 11'2" by 17'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, was the capital of Media and later the summer residence of the Achaemenid kings. The Mongols destroyed Hamedan about 1220 and Timur sacked it in 1386, and the city was partly restored in the 17th century. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This one is a room size piece instead, with a small diamond medallion and a dense lattice of tiny flowers running across the whole field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
