Flower sprays and curling vines in cream, sage and pink are a lovely sight on this rug. Small flower sprays and curling vines in cream, sage and pink scatter across a deep red field. A large lobed medallion sits at the center, navy around a gray-blue inner shape and a cream core, with a small navy teardrop floating above and below. A cream band steps in around the field, with a small leaf motif set into each corner. The main border is burgundy, set with pretty pink and green palmettes joined by gray-tan leaves and fine vines. Cream twist stripes and navy bands with cream and green flowers flank it on both sides. The pile is low in patches across the red field, and the foundation shows in places. The pale band eases the density of the red ground in a formal room. At 9'8" by 15'11", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

About Tabriz rugs
A special court workshop, possibly at Tabriz, is credited with translating the most splendid book illuminations into carpets. Since the late 19th century a complex design has usually reached the weavers as a cartoon, laid out on squared paper with one square for each knot. Tabriz in northwestern Persia has a city workshop tradition, and the discipline of the drawing shows it. Medallions sit properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan laid out in full before weaving began. Tabriz workshops also worked in a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds turn up beside the reds. This rug sits on the red side of that range, with a cream band and a navy medallion set against it.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
