About this rug

The lobed navy star at the center is a remarkable sight. Worked on a deep red field, angular vines and small blossoms in cream, navy and rust fill the space around a bold central form. A lobed navy star sits at the center, holding a red heart and a small cream core, with sharp pendants above and below. Handsome cream spandrels fill the four corners, holding navy squares and jagged leaves. A wide near-black border carries large cream palmettes with red and gold centers, framed by gold guard stripes and a red sawtooth edge. The pile is full, with a few lighter worn spots in the red field. The cream corners break up the heavy red ground in a grand room. At 8'10" by 13'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Heriz rugs

Heriz carpets as the trade knows them do not predate the middle of the 19th century, when they took the place of a rustic weaving made for local use. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, said the weavers of Heriz had for a long time held steadily to the standards of early weaving. Heriz sits east of Tabriz, and it does the opposite of what its neighbor does. Where Tabriz draws a curve, Heriz draws a straight line: big angular medallions, bold spandrels, terracotta and copper against ivory. This one carries the jagged points of its star and the stepped corner pieces on a deep red ground. The near-black border with its cream palmettes gives the whole field a firm frame.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
