About this rug

The geometric star medallion is the remarkable centerpiece of this rug. A large geometric star medallion in muted rose, brown and dark burgundy anchors the deep red field, throwing stiff leaves and angular vines out toward handsome ivory corner spandrels. The wide charcoal main border carries a steady march of oversized rosettes between coppery guard stripes. Angular leaves and stiff vines mix with rounded scrolls above and below the medallion and scalloped edges on the ivory corners. The palette leans warm and coppery, with small sparks of soft blue throughout. Decades of use have settled the reds into a burnished, rusty glow that flatters wood and leather. At 8'4" by 12'11", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Heriz rugs

The carpets of the Heriz district were sold in the West under village names: Serapi for those in light, rather bright colors, and Gorevan for the darker ones. Serapi rugs, a Heriz type, take their name from the village of Sirab, in the mountains between Tabriz and Ardabil. Heriz sits east of Tabriz, and it does the opposite of what its neighbor does. Where Tabriz draws a curve, Heriz draws a straight line: big angular medallions, bold spandrels, terracotta and copper against ivory. This rug follows that plan in its star medallion, ivory corners and charcoal border, though its scrolls and corners curve more than most. The charcoal border and the ivory corners frame the deep red field the way the plan intends.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
