About this rug

The linked hexagonal cartouches on the cream ground set the tone for this wonderful rug. On a deep red field, staggered rows of small boteh in rose, black, tan and slate blue repeat edge to edge, the boteh being the paisley leaf-drop. No medallion breaks the all-over pattern, and the field has no corner pieces. The wide main border runs on a cream ground, with gorgeous linked hexagonal cartouches that hold dark red lozenges and small red and black stylized forms. Narrow guard stripes in blue and red, set with tiny flowers and leaf forms, close the border on either side. The pile is full across the field and in each border stripe. It reads as one calm sweep of red, and the cream border gives the edge a lighter line. At 8' by 11'10", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. The Swiss firm Ziegler began there in the mid-1870s with 40 looms, and by 1894 had 1,200 in the town and 1,500 more in the surrounding villages. Known historically as Sultanabad, Arak in central Persia was the center of one of the country’s largest weaving districts. Surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, with an all-over floral field and a restrained palette as the shared character. This rug keeps the all-over field, in red with touches of blue and cream, and sets a cream band of linked cartouches around it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
