About this rug

A modest navy medallion with an ivory heart is the lovely center of this rug. A deep red field blooms with loose floral sprays in navy, olive and ivory, gathered around a modest navy medallion with an ivory heart. Slender ivory wedges reach in from the four corners, and the ivory main border carries delicate flowering vines in red and navy between dark guard stripes. The overall feel is warm, generous and unmistakably traditional. This is comfort in rug form, the pattern and palette that generations of homes have trusted. The rich red keeps a big room warm, and the ivory border keeps it light. At 10'1" by 13'4", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. The physician and philosopher Avicenna died in Hamedan in 1037, and in the 1950s his tomb there was rebuilt as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow runners are the region’s specialty, but the villages also wove full room sizes like this one. This rug follows the region’s common plan: a red ground, a small medallion and floral sprays. It is close to the Sarouk carpets made for the American market a little further south.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
