About this rug

Fine navy and light blue vines dot the cream field of this delightful rug. The cream field holds fine navy and light blue vines dotted with small brown leaves, ochre blossoms, and rust blossoms. A beautiful olive tan medallion with a pale blue core sits at the middle, its points reaching up and down into the cream. Olive tan spandrels close off the four corners, set with blue vines and ochre blossoms. The main border has an olive tan ground, with navy vines carrying blue and cream palmettes and small ochre flowers. Cream and light blue guard stripes with thin rust lines edge the wide olive tan band on either side. The pile reads even over the whole face. The dense drawing holds the eye, the blue and rust accents warming the pale ground. At 9'10" by 14'0", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Costly silk carpets with figure designs, such as the hunting carpet now in Vienna, were probably woven in Kashan, the silk center of Persia. It was long the custom to bring raw silk from other places to Kashan to be spun and dyed there. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. These were made as the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This piece has that layout, with blue and navy leading the color and small touches of rust and ochre.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
