The navy vines on the cream field make this a charming rug. Over a cream field, navy vines carry blue-gray and brown flower heads, with small olive and rust leaves between them. A beautiful lobed medallion at the center has a gray brown ground and a ring of navy vines, with matching pendants at the top and bottom. The four corners are gray brown, worked with the same navy vines. The main border has a gray brown ground too, with delicate navy scrolls, gray-blue and teal flower heads and brown leaves. Narrow cream guard stripes with small navy motifs edge it, and a cream band of navy vines runs outside. A few pale specks of low pile are scattered over the field and borders, and the rest is full. The gray brown border frames the cream center, fitting well in a bright room. At 9'6" by 12'10", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. The formal Persian rug is most closely tied to the central Persian city of Kashan: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Kashan rugs were made to be the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This rug sets a medallion and four corner pieces on a cream field. Its colors run cream, gray brown and navy, with small touches of rust and olive.

Full care guideReturns
If a rug isn’t right for your space, get in touch within 7 days of delivery (14 days in the European Union) and we’ll help arrange a return or exchange. Because each piece is one of a kind, we handle every return personally.
Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
