About this rug

A navy medallion with lobed edges gives this rug a lovely center. Fine vines and small blossoms in navy, sky blue and rust lace a field of warm cream. In the middle sits a navy medallion with lobed edges, a rust rosette at its core and a slender pendant above and below. Splendid navy corner pieces edged in sky blue cut into the corners of the field. A charming floral vine in navy, rust and blue runs through the cream main border, framed by several narrow guard stripes of tiny crosses and leaves. The layout, a medallion with matching corner pieces, comes from hand-tooled book covers. The pile sits low and the drawing stays crisp. In a room with blue upholstery, the rust finds an echo and the cream keeps the navy light. At 9'11" by 12'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashmar rugs

Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. The Herat carpets are the classic carpets of Khorasan, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Kashmar is a Khorasan town in eastern Persia whose workshops wove big, and wide fields and generous borders are its habit. Here the plan is plainer and more formal than the pictorial pieces: a single medallion, matching corner pieces and a broad border of floral vine. What departs is the color. The deep reds the town is known for are held back to small rust touches, and navy and sky blue lead on the cream ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
