About this rug

Charming dark brown boteh stand in rows across the cream field. Dark brown boteh stand in rows across the cream field, each paisley leaf-drop holding a burgundy center and edged with steel blue. Small blue sprigs and brown dots fill the ground between them. The design is an all-over repeat with no central medallion to gather the eye. The main border has a cream ground carrying a dainty vine of small blossoms in brown, rust and blue. Several narrow guard stripes of dark brown and pale blue edge it on both sides. The pile is low in many places across the field, with pale patches where the foundation shows. It suits a room that needs a restrained pattern, with the brown and blue notes set against the pale ground. At 8'5" by 11'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Birjand rugs

Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. In South Khorasan in eastern Persia, Birjand is the main weaving town, and its rugs are finer and more formal than most village work. The usual designs are a repeating floral lattice or a centered medallion in curved lines, on madder, ivory and deep blue. This rug follows the repeating plan, with curved boteh in rows across the whole field and no single center. Brown, rust and blue blossoms run along the cream border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
