About this rug

Teal and rust corners each hold a red palmette on this charming rug. The cream field is scattered with small red blossoms and black vine sprigs, with a rust ground framing it toward the sides. A handsome lobed medallion in rust and slate blue, with a red core, sits at the center, with small pendants above and below. Teal and rust corners each hold a red palmette. The main border is cream, worked with dainty red blossoms, black stems, rust palmettes and pale teal leaves. Narrow guard stripes in burgundy and pink run along both sides of this band. Pile runs low in a few places, and the foundation shows through there. The light ground keeps the red and teal accents clear. At 7'10" by 11', it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Medallion carpet designs of the 16th century are usually associated with Tabriz, then the Safavid capital and the seat of the royal design workshops. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Medallions are properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan worked out in full before weaving began. Here the lobed medallion holds the middle of the field. Tabriz workshops also worked in a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds turn up alongside the reds. The cream ground here carries red blossoms and black vine work around a rust center.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
