About this rug

A navy garland rings a star-shaped rosette in a long oval on this wonderful rug. At the center of the cream field sits a star-shaped rosette in sky blue and burgundy, a flower seen from above. A navy garland rings it in a long oval, and fine navy vines fill the ground, with pointed pendants above and below. Handsome corner pieces in sky blue and burgundy close the four corners. The cream main border carries a dense navy vine, small burgundy flowers and lozenge cartouches. A tan guard stripe of pretty burgundy and blue palmettes, between twisted rope stripes, runs along each side of it. The pile is full and crisp across field and border. The navy and burgundy are strong, but the cream ground keeps this formal room bright rather than darkening it. At 8'1" by 11'7", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Nain rugs

In the second quarter of the 20th century carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan, and it expanded rapidly on exports made for the European market. By the middle of the 20th century Nain was producing carpets of the Isfahan kind in an extremely fine weave. Nain sits on the edge of the central desert near Isfahan, and its weaving reputation is a twentieth century one, not a centuries-old one. The palette is unusually pale for Persia: ivory grounds with soft blue. Rather than staying pale like many Nain rugs, this piece pairs its cream ground and soft blue with full-strength navy and burgundy for a darker, richer look. The vines and flower sprays are worked small and close, all the way to the border, with drawing fine enough to hold all that vine work.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
