The scrolls on this lovely rug mirror each other along the center line. Graceful scrolling blue vines wander across the ivory field, carrying palmettes, rosettes and small flower sprays in brown, navy and pale blue. There is no medallion; the scrolls mirror each other along the center line. The cream main border repeats the vine, with pale blue palmettes and dark rosettes spaced around it. A delicate wavy blue vine on a tan guard stripe, between twisted rope stripes, edges it inside and out. It has a full antique wash, no color left at strength, and the pile has worn down across field and border, so the weave shows faintly. The low washed pile keeps a big room light, while the navy outlines give the pale ground its shape. At 8'2" by 11'11", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Nain rugs
In the second quarter of the 20th century carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan, and it expanded rapidly on exports made for the European market. Nain sits on the edge of the central desert near Isfahan. It is one of the few Persian towns whose weaving reputation was built in the twentieth century, not centuries earlier. The palette is unusually pale for Persia, and this rug sits squarely inside it. The ground is ivory, the leaves soft blue, and the brown and navy stay in fine lines and small accents. The drawing is fine enough to hold closely worked scrolls across the whole field. With no medallion to interrupt them, those scrolls carry the design alone, and the washed ivory suits that open plan.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
