A lovely lobed medallion with a tan outline sits at the center of the ivory field. The ivory field is crowded with scrolling vines, palmettes and flower heads in steel blue, light brown and olive. At the center sits a lobed medallion with a tan outline and a pale blue stepped core, with a small pendant at the top and bottom. Handsome tan spandrels fill the corners, each holding a pale blue corner piece. The wide main border is tan, holding palmettes in steel blue and olive on charming blue vines. Ivory guard stripes with small blue flowers frame it on both sides. Small white flecks across the field and border show where the pile is thin. The ivory ground balances the blue and brown drawing across a large seating group. At 7'9" by 11'4", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
The story goes that the three Wise Men of the East set out from Kashan to follow the Star of Bethlehem. Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. The formal Persian rug is most closely tied to Kashan, a central Persian city. Kashan rugs were made to be the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This one has a lobed medallion, tan spandrels and a field of scrolling vine, in blue and tan on ivory.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
