The round star medallion makes this a remarkable rug. Dainty scrolling vines and palmettes in navy, camel and wine red crowd the ivory field. At the center sits a round star medallion, ringed in camel and blue around a wine and blue star, with a lozenge palmette above and below. Compact palmette pieces in camel and teal close off every field corner. The wide main border is ivory, worked in graceful navy vines with wine and camel diamond cartouches, set between camel bands. The pile is mostly even, with white specks dotted over the face and along both borders. It suits a bright room, with the cool blue drawing resting calmly against the warm ivory. At 7'8" by 11'10", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Their animal designs match those in royal manuscripts and book bindings, all of them born in the Safavid court design workshop. Kashan rugs carry a central medallion, corner pieces and a field of curling vine and palmette. These were made as the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. On this rug the medallion is a round star in camel and blue, and the vine field is worked in navy on ivory.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
