This lovely rug has a small pale blue star medallion at the center. Over a cream field, charming scrolling vines carry blue palmettes and small blossoms with touches of red and tan. A small pale blue star medallion sits at the center, with a faint tan lozenge around it. The vines run into the corners with no separate corner pieces. The wide main border has a cream ground, carrying a navy scroll with blue palmettes and tan and peach rosettes. Narrow guard stripes in pale blue, dotted with red and navy, edge it on both sides. Small thinned spots are scattered over the field and border, and the foundation shows through them. Cool blue drawing and warm cream ground meet across one surface. At 8'1" by 11'10", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
The story goes that the three Wise Men of the East set out from Kashan to follow the Star of Bethlehem. Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. These rugs were made as the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This piece keeps the medallion small and lets the vine field carry the pattern in blue on cream.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
