About this rug

A tan border of larger boteh runs around the cream field of this charming rug. The field looks cream at first glance, then warms to tan when you stand near it. Rows of boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, cover it in slate blue-green and dark brown with small touches of rust. There is no central medallion; the motif repeats evenly over the whole ground. Around the field runs a handsome tan border carrying a row of larger boteh in the same slate blue-green and brown, with small blue flowers between them. Narrow guard stripes in brown, green and cream, with a fine scrolling vine, edge the border on each side. The pile is low in patches, and white specks show where the surface has worn thin. A steady repeat of the leaf-drop covers the cream ground. At 9' by 13', it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Costly silk carpets with figure designs, such as the hunting carpet now in Vienna, were probably woven in Kashan, the silk center of Persia. It was long the custom to bring raw silk from other places to Kashan to be spun and dyed there. Old Kashans are known for their saturated madder reds, and these rugs were made as the best rug in a house. This one has no medallion: the boteh stand in even rows across the field and again along the border. Slate blue-green and dark brown keep the large rug soft in tone.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
